Update on the Eastern Massasauga

Matt Harris Feb 09, 2006 11:12 AM

I treated him with Baytril per my vet's instructions. The Nebulizer coupled with increased humidity and temps, seemed to do the trick. I caught the respiratory problem fairly early. The snake has eaten twice since the treatment, and has actually developed a mean strike, striking at me vigorously when I walk near the cage! Looks like he's made a full recovery.

too many folks try to self diagnose problems with their herps and its nice to see when someone makes the effort to get the animal to a vet and have it properly treated (of course I know you, Matt, and know that taking the snake to a vet wasn't a hesitation but hopefully others will heed this action that you took). A combination of veterinary treatments and "home" remedies can work well together. Glad to hear the 'sauga is doing well....they are like gold.

The first 2 weeks. Hopefully I'll get to visit the Discovery center when I'm out and check out the collection. I'd like to go out looking for massasaugas on a free weekend.

FYI..I'm heading to Florida Saturday to check on some snakes that just came in, including a female bushmaster(stenophrys). I'll post pics once I get to see her for myself.

Sounds great Matt; I hope it works out that you can visit so that you can see the C. d. durissus you donated...he is absolutely gorgeous and one of everyone's favorites. Unfortunately, there really aren't any good 'sauga spots in this area (Chicago has two small populations but they are hit and miss at best)....we will be doing our field monitoring for 'saugas at my location and you are certainly welcome to pound the brush with us if you want to get into the field a little. When you get into town the best way to reach me is either email, or, my cell (email me directly for that).

That's great about the bushmasters. I acquired a beautiful pair that Earl Turner of Tx was nice enough to donate to us(panamanians - stenophrys)...these Lachesis are addicting. Look forward to seeing the pics. Rob
