I had a Ultra Violet heat lamp...but just switched to a 100 watt Day-glow for basking. It lit up the enclosure nicely. Better temp too. It is still pretty chilly up here in Oregon. I hope that night time temps of 60 to 62 is ok. Either that or I will just have to keep switching bulbs til it warms up (not quite enough room for another clamp lamp). By the way, I also have a 5.0 UV-B bulb too. He is getting used to things. When the dogs bark, he retreats into the dark corner, but pokes his head out to investigate. He is really cute.

Here are a few names in the pool:

-Gripper (My mom's idea)
-Slim (Rylie's idea, immulating "Slim Shady"
-Me, I just call him Pea...as in Sweet Pea

Those night temps will be fine, providing the day temps allow him to bask and warm up enough during the day. Hope the dog isn't too bothersome.

How about... Chris?

I have an "INFRA-RED" heat lamp so that the little guy can sleep and still stay warm.

but I think the claim that they cannot see the light is not entirely true. I recall threads from long ago about it and it is something that often gets discussed on a tarantula forum I visit. See what others say. I like the CHE I mentioned earlier. I live in NH and we keep the house cool at night. I used to use the heat emitter for my geckos.

Thanks Lele...and everyone for your valuable advise. I wasn't aware that they could still see the light. Pudge used one for her entire two years. I have looked into the ceramic heaters, if 60 is too cold, I would certainly invest in one. BTW both of my clamp lamps have ceramic basis...my hubby just loves that I will only settle for the safest (and most expensive) stuff! He also loves that he gets over-ruled by the animals (mostly)!

Thanks again.

VERY CUTE!!!! If your daughter likes Slim, she make like Marshell too
I never used a night light heater with Rana or Lou. Never had any problems either. Veiled's are pretty tough. For a basking light I just used a regular 40 watt bulb for both. When I would mist them in the A.M. I would use warm water in the spray bottles to help warm them up a little.
Good luck and keep us posted on his progress!!

Here's a picture of his "cousin" Rana. LOL,

missed your earlier thread so I'll say congrats here! he is very cute!

if you do have to use heat at night you can get a ceramic heat emitter. They do not give off any light - you don't want any light on him at night. If you do get the CHE just be sure you use a ceramic socket - it will melt a plastic one. You can move the other lights out of the way at night and just rest this on the screen - oh, wait - are you using a reptarium? May have to check about that CHE and its placement so it doesn't melt the material.

His name will evolve - and then you'll have lots of nicknames, too - like sweet pea both of my cats have that nickname (which then turns into pea pie and other silly names! )

enjoy!

Like I said in the e-mail (on 2-2-06), keep him with about a 40W light bulb for basking. 100 watts will cook that little guy! 60 degrees is fine at night, the lower temps (night drops) are actually good for them and completely natural.

I had originally tried the lower watt bulb. The temp in the basking spot didn't even get above 75 degrees. The 10 watt is a day-glo, and is about 3 inches above the cage. The temp is 85 degrees about 12 inches below, and cooler in other areas. He was hanging out about 18 inches below the lamp and the temp there is around 75. There are several different temp gradients in the enclosure. Is this not the way it should be?

You're better off putting a basking perch higher up (6" from top) and using a low wattage bulb (40W). Even if he's hanging out lower, having a 100W bulb on top 3" above the cage still gives him huge potential to go higher (climbing under the screen with belly exposed to 100W of heat) and can lead to burning. If you use a low wattage bulb with perches higher up, there's virtually zero chance of a burn, and if he's not warm enough in the middle of the cage, he'll go up higher on his own. My biggest cages are using 60W bulbs right now (adult male panthers) with room temps around 73-75 during the day.
