Someone knows how to make their own RED lights

kjanda Feb 09, 2006 03:39 PM

I have seen it in a forum before but I can't remember where and I've searched but to no avail. Can you (whomever you are) please post how "exactly" to do that if you would. I need to "make" some 150 watt red bulbs for my "little guys" (burms & retics) new home and they are sort of expensive. Thanks

I used to have an instruction sheet for this at an old job. Unfortunately I don't remember the exact steps.

Another poster not too long ago said he just used spray paint rated for high heat applications.

I think he said it was automotive engine paint. I know thats high heat tolerant. But I swear I remember engine enamal in a post.

Could be old age!

That would be my guess as well. But I don't want to trust my soon-to-be-37 year old memory.

Hey, I turned 37 last year "I Think", well anyway, it wasn't that bad. Derek

one quick question. If a couple light bulbs are expensive to you, how are you caring for these giant snakes properly to begin with? One feeding when they become adults will cost more than a light bulb. Sorry but that just seems like a very minimal expense when it comes to proper care of an animal.

I have new cages to heat that will require a minimum of 10 bulbs (needing 150 watt) plus I always keep about 5 spares (for obvious reasons). When buying 15 bulbs at 8-10 bucks a piece plus shipping it can be over $200.00 bucks. My animals receive excellent care. I was just looking to save a buck where I can. And I've seen it posted before telling how easy it is, yet, I can not find that thread.

I did some searching and could not find it either. The poster goes by Herpzilla. I remember that as we frequented some of the same reptile shops in Cleveland back in the 80's.

Maybe you'll have some time to dig a bit more than I did. Or you could find one of his old posts and email him.

And in your defense, I can totally understand wanting to save money on red-bulbs. Those 150 watt pet store products burn out way too fast compared to a regular old 150 watt bulb you can buy in bulk.

I use one in my Bearded Dragon cage and hate to pay for them every six months. And my wife and I make a pretty living.

My 8' wooden enclosures are finally done offgassing (recall this problem I had about June of last year??). Some of these will go into those (2) monster enclosures and the others will go for current housing. Those hybrid stain urthane mixtures are such a bad idea. The good news is the tanks have been outside since July and just last month started to not give off a distinct odor. What a pain, next time, going with something like Envirotex. Thanks for all your help here in this forum and for being fair and compasionate to everyone.

in the automotive circle im in if we want our foglights or anyother lights a different color we use this stuff you but at wal-mart in the craft section called stained glass paint if you ask the sales person they will be able to help you but i would try it out first out side of any tanks cuz those 150 lights put out more heat than "most" automotive lamps. hope this helps
