Paypal Phishing for your info

Snakesunlimited1 Feb 09, 2006 11:04 PM

I have recently had a few fake emails that look the part from "Paypal" and when I sent the emails to their spoof check they responded to me that they were indeed fake. So I just thought I would post here about it since I know a whole ton of us use paypal. I don't know if I had some spyware pick up my paypal email or if it is more random than that and this is something going out to everybody.

The initial message was that my account had been accessed overseas or had a attempt at accessing my account from abroad. It went on to say that I needed to verify my info and to use the following link. The "Paypal will never ask for your password" bit was in the email and their logo is on the page as well but apparently this is what is known as phishing for info and the link is false.

So you guys out there be careful and don't get caught by this. Paypal has a email account at spoof@paypal.com that you can send any weird emails and they respond with in 24 hours to let you know if it is from them.

Excellent post Jason,

I got the same e-mail last week from frauds posing as paypal. I get them every year. Those who receive these e-mails should know that the ONLY way they should be visiting paypal to check on their account status is by visiting www.paypal.com and signing in - do not ever use links sent in e-mails.

A few months ago I actually believed that fake email and started to fill out the webform. I got suspicious and then closed the webpage.

The next day there was a purchase for $150.00 subtracted from my paypal account. I contacted paypal and after a week or so the money was put back into my account.

Be careful - this stuff is no joke. Somebody could clean out your bank account if they really wanted to.

Paypal will always address you by name in the opening line of the email.

The scumbags do not address you by name in the phishing emails.

Just got home from work and read this. Totally sucks. The scammers are getting real good. The really lame part is that anyone clever enough to run these scams could make good money in a legit enterprise. Glad you got your money back, and hopefully the authorities can make some arrests.

Found some nice areas to look for snakes in another month. Who knows, I might find another eastern. Unlikely, but it could happen

Well glad some of you guys already have seen these and know about them. Sorry you learned the hard way Peter. I was looking at the email and it looks for all the world 100% legit. It was only the link that set me off that it was a fake. The link looked legit as well with all the usual stuff that is on the paypal site but I just thought it was weird that they gave me a link. I must have gone somewhere or looked at the wrong email or something because I have been getting 3-4 scams a day for the last 2 weeks or so. Nigerians wanting to give me millions, paypal wanting my info updated, every pill in the world cheap, and all sorts of other crap.

So anyway guys watch your butts on the web and lets get those kings going for this season!!!!
