New ideas for rack I may build and questions

eatinmachine Feb 10, 2006 04:49 PM

O.K after being shot down a lot on my last idea I have come up with a new idea. I will build a separate hatchling rack out of 2foot long by 14 wide melamine. 3 openings high and 3 shoeboxes wide so 9 boxes. But for the main rack I will use either Hollow core blank doors or melamine I don't know I will need adive on this one. But I will have it one box wide (two if you think that would be better) of my already bought boxes that I measured at 15.5 wide so shelves have to be 16 inches wide. 26" deep and then I need a few inches for heating. 6.5 inches tall but I will use boxes with a sheet or 3 of paper for spacers. My few question are when you cut a hollow core door does it lose strength and could I use cut hollow core doors as shelves and how would I hook it to the sides? Would I still use melamine as sides and should I put a back on it? I will heat it with rope light on a thermostat. And any other ideas? Thanks in advance Josh I will probably ask more questions as I continue.

I believe you can cut hollow core doors but you'll have to add a strip back into the opening. Think of it as a large hollow box, if you cut one end off, that end would now be open. Cut a spacer 1 inch by the length /width of the opening. (1 inch not critical) and glue it in place.

I was wondering if with the hollow core door shelves what kind of glue and wood I would use to put on open sides. Would it lose alll stability if two sides of the shelves where cut? I was thinking of using a 30 inch door and cutting it into 5 pieces and getting 16 by 30 deep so I woudld have 4 openings. A few other questions 1 is the 2 end shelves that have one side of actual door what would happen with them as they might be different than the others. Would the doors expand/ contract much? Would I have to paint them? could I use hollow core doors for the sides? Would this door http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=10700-955-LU2668FJFNN1&lpage=none (copy into browser.) be good? What should I cut it with? What other supplies are nice? Would you screw and nail it or just one to the side? Sorry for so many question just unloading my mind.

What would you cut it with to prevent bad stuff from happening? Would a circular saw be the best or would I be able to do it with just a jig saw? I have both.

To answer your first question you can use either for the sides. Melamine would be easiest IMO. The solid interior will be less forgiving when a screw passes through it into the shelf.

Your second question I didn't follow if you are asking about the door itself. I would find a door constructed with finger joints over the MDF interior.

As far as Bad stuff I imagine you are talking about chips or splintering of the edge. To prevent this you can use a blade with more teeth and a smaller kerf. Something labeled finish cuts will be fine. Another trick is to tape the cut area with tape this will hold the edge enough to prevent damage. The last is to shallow the blade so that it barely passes through the wood itself. The angle of the blade is what causes the splintering the shallower the blade angle the less likely to chip.

I use the both the blade and pay attention to Blade angle the tape trick I havn't tried, but the other two work dreams. Of course these should be done with a circular blade on either a table saw or if you don't have one a circular saw. I wouldn't recommend a jig saw they are not as neat but there are those who have done wonderful things with them.

Lastly the best way to prevent edge damage is to slow cut it witth a hand saw however this technique takes years of patience and a lot of arm. But it can be done.
Good Luck
Jeremy

Thanks for the answers I'll need a new blade with more teeth. I meant on question 2 with are the doors good is I haven't really used them at all I don't even know if I have seen them much but I mean is the door good because I have heard chris say he has worked with good doors and bad doors I just want to know what anyone says about these. Also is it better for the doors to be thicker or does it not matter much? I also want to know do they expand much and do they have to be sealed or painted. I won't be puttin in things that need a lot of humidity. I also now don't have the thermostat I thought I would have and don't know what to do because I don't want to spend over like 50 bucks on a thermostat. Would a dimmer work? Could you give me a sheet on how to hook it up? Sorry for all the questions I just want to know everything before I start.

>>I'll need a new blade with more teeth.

Don't be afraid to spend a little money here, just don't break the bank. I good blade makes a huge difference.

>>I meant on question 2 with are the doors good is I haven't really used them at all I don't even know if I have seen them much but I mean is the door good because I have heard chris say he has worked with good doors and bad doors I just want to know what anyone says about these.

Chris could probally be more clear on what he meant, but like I said find HC Doors with finger joints not MDF. They are stronger and more resiliant to warping, personaly I don't think thickness matters.

>>I also want to know do they expand much and do they have to be sealed or painted.

Yes, they do need to be sealed with either paint or traditional urathane, depends on how you want it to look. Or you could go the laminate route and use Chris's vinyl idea which is what I am going to do in my HC Door cage.

>>I also now don't have the thermostat I thought I would have and don't know what to do because I don't want to spend over like 50 bucks on a thermostat. Would a dimmer work?

Thermostats are worth the money, but a dimmer will work as well. remember these are your pride and joy were talking about.

>>Could you give me a sheet on how to hook it up?

Like a wiring diagram? Thermostats as well as dimmers come with wiring diagrams. If you mean the tape, Matt Graybeal aka justcage just posted an excellent picture of heat tape wired.

>>Sorry for all the questions I just want to know everything before I start.

Thats what Chris and I and most others are here for so feel free to ask. It is through Q & A that we benefit the hobby.

>>How do I know if the HC door is MDF and what is MDF compared to finger jointed without buying and cutting it?

Finger joints look in the corners the wood will be real wood and look like you fingers locked together. MDF is not real wood it will almost be apparent when you look at the door edge. You can always ask about the door blanks. If the employee dosn't know you found the wrong employee.

What are prices on reflectix and are there any other names and where do I find it?

16"x25' = $14.99

I have no idea who else makes it. Good luck just ask an employee.

No the edge frame is made out of real wood finger jointed or MDF naile/glued the surface is just a veneer.

What kind of screws would I use with hollow core doors?

Drywall, wood, etc doesn't really matter. Drywall screws are moisture resistant.

Would there be less of a chance of splintering and things like that if I used a jig saw and cut straight by using a piece of wood at the measurment that was straight? Run the jig saw along the wood at the measurment for short. Less of a chance compared to a circular saw. Is there a good chance with a circular saw?

If you used a fine blade and a guide then it might work. The thing with Jigsaws is one they weren't meant for long straight cuts, and two there is no way to keep the blade straight compared to a circular saw. To much flex within the jigsaw blade itself. This could cause a cut that isn't square along the edge.

You can do anything you want this info is just that info. Along with my recommendations but what works for me may not work for some. I recommend a circular saw with a fine cut blade and of course a guide makes a long straight cut.

My 2 Cents
Good Luck

And by all means ask all the questions you need I would hate for you to go with some unanswered.

I just got back in town and have my computer operating in safe mode. I only skimmed through this thread and don't know if I missed anything.

Regardless, it appears Bighurt did an excellent job of covering all of the bases, so I'll just mention a couple of things.

Definately DO NOT use doors with an MDF frame, like he said. If you know what MDF is it is very obvious to see. Finger-jointed pine is the best I have used, at least among the cheaper doors.

I would not use a jig saw, period. I would not trust it to make a 90* cut through a thick HC door.

I have used a cheap circular saw with an expensive carbide tipped blade and it worked great. I agree with a high tooth count, but you want to be sure that the blade has some offset in the teeth. Super high tooth count blades often have zero offset and these can bind badly in a HC door blank.

Use an edge-guide made specifically for circular saws and routers. This and a carpenter's square makes occasional wood working so much easier.

Lastly, regarding whether to make the rack one or two-boxes wide, this really depends on what you can move in and out of your room/house.

MDF = Medium Density Fiberboard

Looks like sawdust fused together.

Finger jointed pine will have grain cause its real wood.

Does anyone know what lowes or home depot carry? Because if they don't carry it I might as well not even stop. It doesn't say on their site so I don't know. Thanks Josh

The Luan HC door blanks sold at my local Lowes have a real wood frame. They may also carry doors with a MDF frame but I do not see them when I'm there.

I misread your post and when I went to lowes I was looking at the vaneer not the wood I know it isn't finger jointed but doesn this mean it is not real wood or could it still be real wood frame?

If the frame of your door is finger jointed I'm certain it is real wood. I don't think MDF would hold up to a finger joint.

If you mean the door skin is real wood, it could still have a MDF frame.

I suspect they may sell both to get every price range in the spectrum but thats a guess!

A rack does not need much in the way of sealant, but I would still use something more than shellac.

If you have any latex paint leftover from another project that would be enough. If you buy it get some high gloss stuff for bathrooms. A water based poly would be great, but expensive.
