No-pest strips and mice...

LarryF Feb 10, 2006 09:30 PM

I'm sure this has been discussed here before, but I'm having no luck finding it (too many irrelivant hits on my searches).

I've discovered mites in one cage in my snake room. Only one cage and it's a fairly recent aquisition, but I've had it a few months so there's a good chance they've spread already. I've taken out water bowls, sprayed the snake and cage where I found the mites and plan to hang a no-pest strip in the snake rooms (seperate building). My quesion is this: I currently have my mouse colonies in the same room and it would sure be more convenient if I can leave them there (besides they might have mites in their containers). Will the no-pest strip be a serious problem for the mice (including pinks)? If not, will feeding those mice to a snake later be a problem?

Thanks.

I'm not a fan of no-pest strips, however using them in the reptile room to avoid cage to cage contamination might be the exception. Unfortunately I don't know the effects on rodents, it's probably no different than on young snakes. One difference however is if it is not metabolized and excreted, it will build up in a snake as it consumes prey items. (remember pcb's in falcons). Phone your vet clinic for both information regarding toxic effects on rodents, and accumalatory possibilities.

Good luck

Ian
