Albino Aneides lugubris in the east bay california

johnnycat Feb 10, 2006 09:48 PM

I just moved to California from Minnesota, and I must say I am not disappointed. On my second herp hunt in the east bay, I found this guy. An albino arboreal salamander. Red eyes, true albino. Amazing. Found a normal arboreal right next to it, makes for a good comparison shot.

Absolutely INCREDIBLE!!

What an amazing find! The picture is even better with the normal salamander for comparison.
You've got a great case of beginner's luck. Next you'll have to find a two-headed east bay snake...

The trip did start off well, I found my first snakes since moving out here, two pacific ringnecks. After living in Michigan for 25 years, I never saw a single ringneck. Out here, the first two logs I flipped had ringnecks underneath. It was a good trip all together. I put up a blog for all the stuff I'm finding out here.

Hi John,

Once in a lifetime find indeed! I'm pretty sure you'll very well enjoy the longer herping season here compared to Michigan. I haven't poked around for a while so I'm completely jealous, hehe. Hope to see you out herping. Take care.

Two rattles sticking out of hole make for a fairly effective "Do Not Disturb" sign.

Hi

Found those two when I was looking under rocks. Needless to say that I placed it back carefully after taking a quick snapshot to minimize the disturbance. A couple of seconds later some cattle caught my scent and they started to chase me downhill (I can almost hear the banjo play!) LOL. What an exciting day that was.

Definitely better herping here than Michigan and Minnesota. Every time I go out herping, I see something. Sometimes just a cal slender or two, other times stuff like this albino. My "must-see" list is Crotalus, Charina and Lampropeltis. I'm sure in time I'll find them.

Keep an eye out in the field for a 6'2" skinny guy with a goatee and glasses. That's me.

Oooops! meant to say Minnesota not Michigan. Anyway, good luck on the remainder of the season and don't forget your fishing license when going out. I'll make sure to say hi if I see someone that fits that description. Take care.

Awesome find. I keep hoping one of mine will produce an oddity some day. And yes CA has got to better than MN. I just moved to GA from MN, talk about going from a herping waste land to a herping paradise.

johnnycat Feb 14, 2006 04:54 PM

Wasteland is right. In the 10 years I lived in Minnesota, I found a few garter snakes, one brown, one redbelly, and two prairie skinks. Michigan was a bit better, found a lot of stuff there when I was growing up. Still, nothing in the winter there like we have here. I still can't believe that I find something every time I go out looking, not to mention the cal. slenders I find in my back yard every morning. This is one of the primary reasons I moved to california.

That would be about max for that place. Yuck!

Send it to Rust in Ga. so he can breed it for you.
