interspecies mingling

Would it be all right to put an iquana and a jungle carpet python in the same cage?

A herbivore and a carnivore, they wouldn't compete for food, and I think even a smallish medium iquana would be way too big to eat, aside from the fact that the snake probably wouldn't like it anyway.

Predation, Stress, Cross Contamination, and not a good idea. As keepers we are responsible for the care and wellbeing of our animals. To mix any species like this and force them to cohabit is not sound husbandry.

Look at it like this. At zoos ever see herbivores and carnivores housed together. Most zoos have reptiles on displayed. Ever see lizards housed with snakes. Years of zoology education and knowledge keep the animals safe while confined.

My post was not meant to flame you on your idea. I hope this post has answered your question and sparks a good KEEPER.

Thanks.

The Jacksonville Zoo has an exhibit that consist os snakes and turtles together. Not just any snakes either, but a Diamondback Rattle snake, an Eastern Hognose, an Eastern Box turtle, and I believe one other turtle species. Nice size cohabitating exhibit. Not recommended, but it does happen.

they can and do eat the occasional insect and a wiggly tail on a snake could be mistaken for something tasty...Just a thought..Not to mention that iggies can be quite crabby at times and might not like the intrusion, lizard bites are can easily break those fragile snake ribs.

I've personally seen an adult green iquana chase, kill, and eat a mouse, but it was a long time ago.

Jenna, Note that all species involved in the exhibt do not prey on each other in nature. That is the only reson it works.

Iquanas actually feed on Fish, small birds, their eggs, and insects in nature. I would not be surprised at any bite sized animal that ended up din-din.

Yes I am aware that these species do not prey upon each other. I was simply responding to the remark that zoos do not co-habitat reptiles. And though these sppecies do not prey on each other, I have seen box turtles eat ground dwelling birds (dove) with out any hesitation. Full grown adult birds at that. Were they starving....no, they just wanted some meat with their veggies!! I still do not recommend co-habitating species.
