Question for breeders.

johninbs Feb 10, 2006 11:40 PM

Since it's breeding time again, I was just wondering.....what do you guys do with your offspring? I just started keeping corns since last summer. I have 4 05's but I don't plan on ever breeding them when they get older. I just love keeping them as pets. Back to my question, aside from Kathy, and Don at SMR, and the other big breeders who sell alot of corns, what do you smaller breeders do? I guess some of you sell to local pet shops. I'm just curious, I'd be afraid of not finding homes for all the babies and getting stuck with them. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against breeding, actually if I had more room and more time I would love to try it sometime down the road.

Thanks,
John

Just wanted to say beautiful snake.
This is my first year trying to breed. There are listings in my area, and I have been spreading the word that I will have babies for sale in a few months. I am not worried about finding homes for the babies. you just undersell the pet stores, advertise, is my plan. As I said, this is my first year, so we will see. I would have no problem keeping the babies that did not sell right away or at all. More for me! LOL.

Thanks for the comment. Good luck with the breeding. My problem would be getting attached to the babies and not wanting to sell them. Wish I had more room.lol

I have actually converted one of the bedrooms to a "pet room". Until I get more shelving, i don't really have much more room. Although, everytime I say that, I end up with a new snake and make room. I probably will get attatched to the babies. I already told my BF that I am keeping anything really cool, or if by chance we have a hidden het and get something we don't already have. I am limiting myself to one or two, though.

I'll keep my eyes open around here. Maybe I'll take one off your hands. My wife will kill me afterwards.

i only have one pair currently that i breed and they produce one clutch of 25 eggs on average. the first year i was able to sell all my babies by word of mouth the second year i was only able to sell about half as many as the first year by word of mouth . so i then started calling petstores to see what they wanted and was basically ignored. so i ended up giving many away as gifts. the third year i wasnt able to sell hardly any by word of mouth and had to really work at "selling" them. i took a year of and ended up having a lady call me who had 2 of my siblings from the first year and they had bred and she wanted to know what to do with the eggs so i took them and hatched them and was then lucky enough to get a pet shop to take all of them. so from what ive learned is that word of mouth only goes so far when in the same circle you needto advertise.

You make me proud. It seams like alot of the people who get into herps nowadays think you "have to breed them", finally someone who just enjoys keeping them.

A lot of people never think that it will be hard to sell the babies and don't even ask around before hand to see who might want them. Let alone the people that have little to no experience with herps and are all ready trying to breed them. It gets real bad on the leopard gecko forum where people are asking how to breed them and they still don't even know how to properly gutload crickets.
