Ceramic Heat Emitter

BDHomer Jul 26, 2003 03:25 PM

I bought one of these things thinking they are used for when the temp gets too low when the lights are off at night in the tank. ( was 40 dollars too). Is this the right thing I need for that use? Or is this thing used to replace a heat lamp during the day?

I keep mine on 24 hours. But only if you have bright lighting in the tank. If you dont then keep the baskinf light on and put the heater on at night.

it realy depends on what kind of set-up you have.(i.e; size of tank, equipment to work with, etc) You can use that CHE for a 24/7 heat source if you get something like that ZooMed light stand. It adjusts to how high you want to keep the heating element from the source of contact. So you can have it low during the day, and high at night. I use mine for my snakes though. Beardies need bright light so it might not work so well.
Works awesome with my Pythons though. They last forever too. Way longer than bulbs. Hope this helps somewhat. Good luck.

Thanks alot for the replies. I also bought this zoo med temp thing... It's really a weird machine.

It's called a Repti Temp 500-R? I plugged in the lamp with the CHE but the CHE didn't seem to turn on. I also set the Repti Temp all the way to highest to see if that would turn it on, but it didn't. Anyone have any experience with this thing?

Also- I was wondering.. I notice the Humidity in my beardie's tank (55gallon) much lower around where the heat bulb is. I'm having problems keeping the humidity down in his tank and wondering if the CHE will add dry heat to the tank and get the humidity down to a lower temp?

And another question!

I am very paranoid about my set up, and was wondering if anyone can comment on it.

55 gallon tank
Subsrate- Paper towels ( he has parasites )-otherwise normally Repti Sand
Basking area-Cardboard('cause of parasites again) otherwise going to build a large ramp thing inside the tank made outta wood

The long UV bulb I have doesn't stretch across the whole length of the tank, does it need to? Stretches where he basks though, and only that. Near the heat lamp.

Little guy is eating freeze dried crickets ( only about 5 a day, and 5 wax worms-and a decent amount of veggies) He won't touch live crickets normally. He is about 4 months old, and I am giving him that many waxworms a day because he was getting so skinny I could see his bones because of the parasites.

This first month of having him has been a real tough time. But hopefully once the parasites are gone, and he gets settled in better, everything will be fine. So any help or comments on my set up and what I'm doing would be great!

P.S.-

I had the little guy on my couch with me, distance is about 2 1/2 feet from where I sit to floor. He tried to jump off the couch thinking he could fly, but mid air I quickly grabbed him by the tail ( had to, didn't want him to hurt himself falling ) and set him on the couch, then took him to his tank.

Question is, what is the max distance a beardie cam jump from that he wont hurt himself?
