My 7 year old snake just died !?!?!?!

Robert Feb 11, 2006 07:26 AM

Hello all...Today, I cam home from work (3rd shift) and checked on my snakes as usual and my first snake ever owned had her head in her water bowl and was as dead as a door nail...It almost seemed as if she committed suicide...I checked on her yesterday along with my other animals and everything was fine...She was alert, active and overall perfect or so I thought...This was her first year breeding and everything was looking good as far as that goes...I just don't know how, why this happened or even what I should do...One year ago today I bought my first house and 7 years 7 months to the day was when I purchased my first ball python!?!

Many balls get RI's during breeding season. I'm thinking that possibly she got an RI and you didn't notice, it happens to a lot of people, it is how Ralph lost one of his lesser x phantom males. These guys hide their illness well and breeding season puts so much extra stress on them that an RI can kill them quickly. If you are going to have a necropsy done please keep us posted as to what happened.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Having any animal for a short time and losing it is hard let alone your first one and had it for so long.

I’m sorry. I know how it feels to lose an animal you really like. And not realizing beforehand that there was a problem always makes it even worse for me. The only way you stand of chance at this point of figuring out what happened is to bag up and refrigerate the snake and get it to a veterinarian who will do a gross necropsy, take tissues and send them out for histopathology. That’s assuming you’re not used to doing that yourself. It’s possible you could learn a lot just from taking a look inside, i.e., a lung full of fluid.

Has your collection been stable? Or have you added new animals recently, or had any of yours out on breeding loans?
