My Cuban Tree Frog appears to be ill....

kittypoop7 Jul 26, 2003 03:27 PM

I just got a couple of Cuban tree frogs about a week ago and one isn't doing so well. He sits in his water bowl all day, isn't eating, and I just noticed when I changed his water that there is white filmy stuff floating in the water around his legs. It also looks like his front foot is a little bloody. I'm assuming it's some type of bacterial or fungal infection and was wondering if anyone can recommend a treatment for him. I heard that you can use some kind of tropical fish treatment to soak him in for a few minutes, but it didn't say what kind to get. Please help!

How often are you changing your water? Most frogs defecate in the water, but I've noticed my Cubans do it more than anything, so you have to change the water regularly.

If you tell us everything you know about how you keep him (tank size, humidity, temps, what you feed it, dusting, substrate, etc.) I'm sure someone will be able to pinpoint your problem and hopefully lead him back on the right road!

I hope your froggy gets better and you can figure out what's going on to correct it. I know that some of my Cubans have gone through periods where they barely eat, so I don't worry about that too much unless it gets out of hand or they look emaciated, but the bloody-looking leg and white stuff I'd worry about! Good luck!

By 'a few' I hope you dont means more than two for something like a 20 gallon, if you have a 20 gallon or even something like a 30, you probably should only have 2 frogs tops, if even. It’s possible he got an injury from getting in the others way if you’re crowding the frogs. Crowding can be extremely stressful for Cubans (or any frog or other herp) So I would strongly suggest you make sure you aren’t over dosing the population of your tank.

No, I only had two in a 20 gallon tall tank. My frog died the next morning after I posted my message. I don't think there was much I could have done. I only had him for a week so he was probably sick from being shipped or something. The other one is doing well though. Should I try to find him another Cuban friend or don't they care much about companionship?

Nah, they don't need a companion. If you choose to get one, make sure you find out what happened first, are able to find out if this one you have is 100% healthy or not, and are able to provide a 3-month quarantine so that any new frogs won't kill what you already have!
