Just got back from the All Ohio Reptile Show..........

Didn't intend to buy any snakes...Really! I like to go there to get my frozen rodents. Needed 3 different sizes after turning the heat back on in my reptile room a couple of weeks ago.

Saw some '05 "greenish" ratsnakes. Have not seen many there since Brian of BHB stopped coming when they made it hard to cross into Ohio from MI with reptiles. You now require a special dispensation from the Pope. I have one of his albino greenish rats (Brian's not the Pope's) one of the first snakes I ever purchased.

Anyway...These little ones were already showing some green hues, which I took as a good sign. The seller was asking $20...a fair price, indeed. But I had to spend most of my cash on rodents, like I said. When I had spent over $50 for 125 frozen rodents, I had exactly $12 left. Made the offer on my way out the door, so I now have a little '05 greenish rat that I paid exactly $12 for. She's a little beauty & I think she has great potential. Needless to say, I am well pleased. Duffy

Hi Duffy, I might have walked by you today. So what are these greenish guys? Do you have pics? I dropped $200 on rodents then split (actually had to go to BOTH Rodent Pro AND Vince to get all of what I needed). The rodent guys take plastic though, so that helped. I'd like to know more about these "greenish" guys.

I was there when you bought the snakes! I bought one shortly after. The vendor told me they are yellow rat x black rat intergrades that naturally occur in south carolina. She said the adults have a nice greenish tint. I dunno. I picked one up because they're different, and had great temperments.

Did you get the male or the female? There were 2.1 when I first looked, and she gave me one of the females so she'd still have a pair in case someone wanted one. Which works for me since I have a male albino greenish (several years old, but eventually it may work out??). I think they are great. The adults can really vary, but I even like the look of some of the more average ones. Glad to see someone else here got one of 'em. Let us know how yours works out. Duffy

I got the male. I don't plan to breed. He was just the first one I looked at. The vendor told me they were born in August '05 FYI.

Be sure to post photos of yours as it grows and I'll do the same.

...are an intergrade between the black rat and the yellow rat. These ones were labeled as South Carolina Greenish Ratsnakes. The "greenish rat" is highly variable, especially in nature where there may be more or less influence from yellow to black. They often have the stripes of the yellow rat, and sometimes have a greenish look to them. Some are almost ugly, while others are rather striking (eye of the beholder?). As for what this little one looks like...Pretty much like any other BABY North American Ratsnake. A little lighter than your typical black rat. And like I said...I can detect just a hint of green. So we shall see. I think she's a little beauty. See you at the show. Duffy
