REPTILE RULERS---Apalachicola Kingsnakes

kingsnaken Feb 11, 2006 10:48 AM

I watched a very interesting Reptile Rulers this morning about Apalachicola Kingsnakes. The show was from 2004. I just love these Kings. Dr. Bruce Means set up a trap to catch them, and he supposedly caught one in his trap, but it seemed awful tame for a wild caught. Who Knows? Derek

If it was the one I'm thinking of...(Nat'l Geo.?)he used Sean B.'s snake.
Did he have Kenny Krysko with him?

Yes, Kenny was on there. They show the Herpetologist buying a pair of Appys from Gulf Coast Reptiles at the 2004 Daytona Expo. He was going to breed his pair in a couple of years and then let the babys go in the same area where he was looking for them. Do you breed these? Derek

what is reptile rulers?

kingsnaken Feb 11, 2006 06:49 PM

It is a TV show with 2 episodes on Saturday morning on the National Geographic channel. Most of the episodes that I have seen are about serpents. It is a very good show. Although I watch Jeff Corwin and Steve Irwin, they don't really compare to some of the Reptile Rulers shows that I have seen. Reptile Rulers is about scientists and herpetologists from around the world studying Herps. Derek

Originally, I think the title was Saving the King of Snakes or something similar on Nat'l Geo's Snake Wranglers (11/04).
Well, that was what disturbed me the most I think.... That a herpetologist (Dr. Means) would buy a pair of snakes and imply that he was going to release their offspring (or whatever generation) into the wild. Maybe good maybe bad but what the average person might get from that is that it is O.K. to do that with his animals. I do not believe we want the release of animals into the wild by (just any)people even if their intent is good. (Say I would love to go out and find them in my area so I plant some????)
We had a quick chat at that show. I remember the cameras and all at one point but they were not with him as we talked briefly. It was fun to meet him.
Of course most "in the field live" shots are staged. It would take forever to get what you want and maybe never to find what you're looking for.
Oh... YES I do hope to have some young'n's this year.

Yes, that (snake in the trap) was a Sean B. animal like Mark said. It truly takes forever to find one in the wild. I was there for a whole week and combed a huge area and found zippo! It took me awhile to get a decent (appalachicola) pair together myself. I am looking forward to breeding this F-1 Krysko female & a WC male this year:

nice ones zoldy!that one on the bottom is wild caught?cool.all the wild-caught ones i've seen pics of that were found in the least couple years,at least, were all blotched(which i think hints at eastern influence-some more obviously so than others)...yeah that figures-i get animal planet-(thank god,the planet's funniest animals, and stupid pet tricks,etc.!)-and about a hundred other channels of mostly crap-but not nat'l geographic...bummer,i need to look into why i don't get that.sounds like a good show.let's hope it lasts.

That is why I cancelled my satellite. They wanted me to buy a extra 50 channels to get the one I wanted. I got so mad I just turned it all off and saved the 75 a month.

The show itself was a good a good one. But as you know with all shows: The viewer wants results, and if you spend a half hour watching a show about trying to find a rare animal in the wild, what good is it to the viewer if they don't even find it? The average viewer believes that in the world of TV, EVRYTHING is, and must be possible!!! They don't understand that folks like us (I'm a perfect example): go to the ANF with a tent, lots of field knowledge, hiking gear and spend a whole week and hundreds of bucks out there and still find nothing!!! THAT'S REAL life!!! But of course in the world of television this is unacceptable!
I do have a copy of this show and it was still a program worth watching (at least the "prop" snake was real). I can also say that (having been to their place) the Krysko's are good people!
Havn't met up with Bruce (Means) yet, but would like to soon. . .

That is why I like O'Shea more than the rest. He has at least failed on a show or two. Also when I have seen him at shows he is more interested in people that have something to say then in selling himself. He actually talked to another guy and myself so long that some of the people that where waiting to buy his new book walked off. I believe he is one of the only guys that doesn't use prop animals.

A rare combo these days. . .
Good point Jason! If I made a TV show there'd be a LOT of failures! A lot of empty snake bags! That's just the way it is in the world! And I would like nothing more than to portray THAT then something that isn't true!
Though I do have to admit that all of MY herp trips are ALWAYS a success! That is because I value just being out there and enjoying nature even if I do come up empty handed; It's always a great, relaxing experience just to have the opportunity and the possibility to go into the woods/field and maybe seeing a herp in their world!!!

That was a good show. The only reason I have cable is for animal shows. I read they are making one on just different types of kingsnakes . Not sure if National Geographic channel or animal Planet but it will be out end of this summer.
I imagine in an hour only a tiny bit about each group but still sounds great .
