Help WTF Swollen eye

ceandra Feb 11, 2006 11:51 AM

Friday, one of our 2 WTF, had kept rubbing his eye as if he was shedding and couldn't get the skin off. Now, 4 days later, the eye socket looks slightly larger than his right eye and the left pupil seems to be enlarged as well. It looks pretty clear, just enlarged - no film or opacity. He keeps on blinking a lot but we don't see the nictating eyelids as clearly as in the right eye. He's been trying to hide a lot and seems to want to be left alone. We do not know of any vets around us that knows anything about frogs and depend upon the little advice we can get from our local pet stores. Anyone ever experience this condition? Any recommendations?
I'd bought Friday around Oct, 2005. He shares a simply, decorated 10-gal tank with Gollum, who's about a year old. We put 10 crickets coated with ReptoCal approx every 7-10 days for the two of them and Friday seems to get first dibs as he always seems to have "milk-ring" mouth. My son changes the half-pint container of water every day and the paper towels lining the bottom of the tank every other day. We usually have four liters of water treated with AquaPlus in reserve for cleaning and water changes.

If the frog has a problem shedding, then your tank is too dry; the humidity should be at least 55%. It is impossible to know what if anything is wrong with your frog without seeing him; if you could post a picture that would be helpful. If not, then you should take him to any vet that will see him; even if they do not have amphibian experience, many vets can consult with reptile specialists over the internet and be able to provide care for your frog. You just need to find a vet that is willing to do this.

Oh and just to add, a ten gallon tank is WAY too small for two WTF. You really should get a larger tank, at least twenty or twenty five to accomodate them.

I have not heard of this before. You may need to try and find a vet.

You should, however, increase your tank size as soon as possible. Two white's should have a 30 gal. minimum as they get quite large.

Good luck.
