My First February Snakes...

Obediah2 Feb 11, 2006 10:20 PM

It is very warm here in southern California and it has been for a while - I went looking for some snakes and I found TWO! The first was a gopher snake under cover - it seemed to have eaten fairly recently. It was pretty cool because there happened to be an eight-year-old kid walking by with his dad, so he got to hold the snake. Needless to say the kid was VERY excited.

I also found a Ringneck crossing the path. It was probably around 14" long - I think they are so cool looking!

Anyway...I have now seen a snake in every month of the year, and that makes every month for 12 consecutive months! The downside is that I got sunburned today...who remembers sunscreen in February?

Have fun,

Jake

I have seen a snake in every month of the year in Michigan, but over a many year period. My favorite story is when it got to 55*F. for three days in January, melted everything, and flushed a number of Eastern garters from their winter burrows. Most of the hard months, Dec, Jan, and Feb have been the garter snake. Also have seen a massasauga in Feb, but I've never seen a ringneck except bt. April and September. We don't have gopher or bulls.

I've spent one winter in CA, Monterey, when I was in the Army, and I saw a few snakes and lots of lizards under cover on the surface. Always wanted to go back and see how good the winter herping was with more freedom to look.

Nice photos...TC
