Fire Belly chewed his own feet off

mrnewt Feb 11, 2006 11:05 PM

We have had a newt for about 3 years that was given to us. I'm not sure the "type", "Mr. Newt" is brown with a orangish belly. We recently purchased a Fire Belly Newt, "Kong". Since we no longer have fish we put them in a smaller tank that has a filter, and something for them to climb on. We feed them newt pellets and blood worms. Since moving to the new tank. Mr. Newt the older one has molted several times. But my main concern is "Kong" our Fire Belly, he has chewed off 2 of his feet and the end of his tail. Are they sick??? What should I do? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Do they look like they are the same species? And WHAT species? Some newts sold as "firebellies" are aggressive species that cannot be kept together.

Also, any new newt should be kept in quarantine before mixing with established ones, as they often arrive with diseases.

Frequent molting can be normal, or it can be sign of stress. It's not clear in your post... Did Kong chew the feet off Mr. Newt? Or off himself?
