KEIGHLEY NEWS (UK) 09 February 06 Sue launches 'Frog Rescue' (David Knights)
Don't be alarmed if you see Sue Patchett crouching in the middle of the road in the dark with a bucket.
And don't call the police if you find the Riddlesden woman in your garden waving around a torch.
She is simply picking up frogs to take across the road to the safety of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. Sue, 27, of Bylands Avenue, rescued 133 frogs in just nine evenings last year in the Scott Lane area.
She will be out again this March and hopes other people in Riddlesden and East Morton will help her.
She has enlisted the help of Bradford councillor Dorothy Clamp in starting a "Friends of Frogs" group.
The councillor, who represents Riddlesden, has also persuaded highways officers to erect signs to warn drivers about the frogs.
Sue said frogs were regularly killed while hopping across Riddlesden and East Morton roads to the canal to spawn.
She said: "I felt sorry for them. They're everywhere. Near one bridge there were hundreds on the track.
"As soon as it gets dark they jump out from people's gardens."
Sue said she could easily have spent even longer collecting the frogs each night. "It's more fun than TV," she said.
"I wasn't bothered about picking them up. When you see them on the road you don't think about it.
"A lot of people saw my bucket and thought I was crazy. People thought I was burgling. I was in people's gardens with a torch!"
Cllr Clamp said she had heard of Friends of Frogs groups elsewhere in country who went out together to rescue the creatures.
Anyone who wants to join Sue this year should contact her on 01535 665678.
