Question for you corn experts....

repzoo44 Jul 26, 2003 04:24 PM

What makes up the genetics of a candy cane. I have been looking at other websites and I see that the miami phase is heavily(or totally) involved. However, one site shows creamsicle corn influence with the miami phase and another looks like just selectively bred miami phase. So, are candy canes partially emoryi or can you get the same color by going at it in two different ways. Just curious as to what exactly I have. Also, can candy canes be used in any other breeding projects besides more candy canes. I have one candy cane and one very pretty normal that I would like to try and breed next year. I would like to get another corn to add to the mix. Im thinking of getting a motley striped just because I like them so much but was wondering how that would work out with a candy cane. Im new to the breeding thing so im still figuring out what each morph comes from. Thanks for your help. EP

OK, there are apparently two ways that people have gotten candy canes.
one is breeding a miami phase to a creamsicle.
other people have bred a miami phase to an albino.
basically all it is is an extreme form of amelanism.

i'm certainly not an expert, but this is what i've been told. i'll post when my candy cane eggs hatch (bred her to an albino male) to let everyone know what came of it.

i've never heard of breeding a miami to a miami to get candy canes.. and that i know of candy canes can't be used for any other morph besides more candy canes.

considering Candy Cane is a Miami derivative,i feel you can use your candy in a few projects : MIAMI,CRIMSON and MILK SNAKE PHASE all Miami derivatives to produce Hets and double Hets,or to your normal to produce normals het amel (or not so normal) and poss. reg. amels. Chris

Well I have wondered the same thing about this. I have asked Don this question and he has told me that breeding two miami's will or can produce candycanes. If you breed a miami to a candycane you will get miami's. I have also heard breeding a creamsicle and a miami can also produce candycanes but Don did not tell me this. Don told me that it takes many years of selective breeding to get real good candycanes.
