A boy and his Bull.

dmac Feb 12, 2006 12:18 PM

This is Matthew and his 1 an 1/2 year old Snow bull snake. He wanted a Boa (I have two) because he thought his friend's corn snake was "too boring." I talked him into a bullsnake instead, citing that they're bigger, rattle their tails and hiss. This boy (snake) does not disappoint. All of the drama but never even a "bluff" strike so far. Actually kinda cool when you walk in Matthews room and sometimes you hear the tail go off for a couple of seconds! I'm a little jealous sometimes.

Had to put him on restriction (no t.v. or playstation) for picking up this banded water snake somewhere around our house. He knows the rules-no picking up wild snakes without me present. Funny thing is, while he handled the water snake for several minutes without incident, I moved it to a safe place (dense hedges) with a 4' hook and it constantly struck at me! I waited till the kids watching left and the snake was gone until I went back in the house. Kinda makes you wonder if wild snakes can really sense threat/danger by smell or other..?

makes the snake look a lot bigger. If I were holding it, it would look like a worm! He eats one rat every weekend, and when he hits two years, I'm gonna back off two every other weekend. This snake also has never seen a mouse in his life since I received it shortly after hatching. Rats only.

Ok,Thanks, Just got some nice s.Texas bulls hatchlings from John cherry after not having a Pit for a long while. The female was real mellow when she first arrived and now she's a real hisser and does strike alot(flat of my hand,no purchase)Hope she calms down eventually although you make the attitude quality sound interesting. I'm getting older now and getting tired of getting bitten(one of the reasons I love my Black Milks!) LOL Good luck.

bob, if you are artificially heating her enclosure that may well be why she's switched attitudes recently, she may be stressing & trying to tell you something......just a guess but pituophis will do quite well, fare better & are far less 'snappish' in the 75* range & even slightly lower as they are for the large part, fossorial in nature to begin with. hope this is helpful to you & good luck w/ her......

I have been keeping her warmer and will turn down the heat. Thanks Dan I appreciate that. I will let you know how it goes.
Bob.

I took your advice and replaced the larger heat pad under the new Bulls sweater boxes while in quarantine with a smaller Ulatratherm and interestingly enough the background temps in the cages is room temp, anywhere from 67* to 71* and the Bulls only throw a small segment of their body over the heat pad leaving the majority of their mass away from the heat source. I'll let you know if the attitude changes in a few days. Thanks again.

cool bob, i've found that alot of folks err on the warm side but actually most n. american colubrids prefer cooler temps generally speaking. it's ok to have a 'warm' part of the day just not all day. here's a pic of a large fellow that's never been exposed to anything other than slowly changing room temps his entire life & is one happy camper.....that & his g/friend haqve an upcoming date. :>]...........

BobS Feb 14, 2006 03:44 PM

Very interesting looker. What is he? When you say room temps, are you saying 68* to 71* in the winter and 70* to 80* in the summer (air conditioning on sometimes)?

If you don't mind me asking, what size box do you have him in?
Thanks,
Bob.

dan felice Feb 15, 2006 05:55 AM

he's a salt & pepper bull bob. instead of having white sides, his are speckled. the female is particularly 'peppered' which looks really nice. re: temps, in the winter, he's in brumation usually around 55*. during the summer, you're guess was right about on target [ambient air temps] until it gets too hot outside, then i will 'cool' the house. i keep him in a 2' x 4' box though curiously, i once moved him into a 2' x 8' condo & he seemed to hate it. stopped eating & everything, it was like it was too much for him. put him back in his little box and all was forgiven.......good luck w/ your snakes this year!
