Cham not eating

safo Feb 12, 2006 02:07 PM

I am soemwhat worried about my almost 3 yo male tama. It doesnt seem liek he is eating very much, he is looking somewhat thin. He seems to liek butter worms when i put them in there, usually lieks silky, but when i put some in he wont eat them.I have recently put up a divider in between his cage and my 3 mo amib males cage.i believe this was causing stres, althought there is about a foot in between them. Today he ate aprrox 20 wax worms which makes me think that he may be finiky? but to the point of being thin(ribs showing)? i will moniter his food intake for the next few days (see if he eats when offerd, and then removing it, as aoppsed to cupo method that was currently in effect).

If 20 waxworms isn't eating much, I'll have to guess that your problem is overfeeding. That's simply way too many for one day.

waxworms are very high in fat so don't let him get too used to them. Darwin (bearded dragon) and Luna boht LOVE waxworms ovcer about anything and butterworms are not far behind. Silkies they love(d) then tire of quickly.

As for not eating/weight loss - have you had a fecal done? Maybe parasites form a bad batch of crickets. It's easy, cheap and stress free(!) for your vet to do one (and should be done about every 6 months just to moniotor.) The stress of seeing your new cham could certainly be adding to it. You guy has had his own territory and then you let some little whipper-snapper move into his view...one foot is not a very big distance in cham land

keep us posted and see about gettng that fecal done just to rule it out.

Ok i'll get a fecal done this week, i have a few friend sthat work at a vet.But i fhe was being over fed he wouldnt be so skinny, i'll try to get a pic tomrow. thanks

I think whgat eric meant about over feeding is if he is eating 20 waxworms EVERY day. If that is the case than he is not OK b/c he is skinny. But I think you fed him that much in simply trying to get him to eat.

Do you have a scale? It is good to have to weigh during times of not eating, being gravid, etc. He may just be backing off due to the time of year (short day length). Darwin (dragon) has been in semi-brumation since September. He hardly eats and has not shed but he is holding his weight b/t 362-365g so I do not worry about him - the scale is priceless since he somtimes "looks" skinny to me. So for your guy maybe just let him not eat for a few days then offer him a cricket and see how he does.

As for fecal, just scoop up a fresh poop (always a fun thing to do) and bring it to vet. Let us know how it goes.
