Questions about scales

waspinator421 Feb 12, 2006 05:27 PM

I am planning to get a scale so I can keep track of Lucutis's weight. I have never used scales with reptiles before, so I am unsure what the best procedure is. How often do you guys weigh your chams to make sure they are healthy? Is there an optimum weight for a male veiled, or does it vary? What is the best kind of scale to use? I would also like a scale that I can use for my new monitor as he grows... is there one out there that can weigh a larger reptile, but still be accurate enough for a cham?

Thanks in advance for your help!

By the way, here is a picture of my new baby monitor that I named Pollux. I can't wait until he arrives! (have to wait for temps to warm up)

You'll probably need a couple of scales, one for your Veiled and one for your Monitor, at least when your Monitor gets larger. Adult Veileds come in all sizes and have different optimal weights. You can get a nice digital scale at Wal-mart in the Kitchen appliances section. I usally weigh my animals once a month but if you think you see some changes going on, its always a good idea to get a weight on them.

I probably use the same scale - made by The Good Cook. Darwin (dragon) just plops in it, but Luna always scrambled to get out. So I would place her on her transport branch and laid it across the tray (small branch, just a bit longer than tray) weigh her. Then I would deduct the weight of the branch alone (16g - funny that I still remember this). This scale cost about $25 and weighs in both grams and ounces. You definately want one that weighs in grams. Hope this is helpful
