What I have been waiting for...

Neal_ Feb 12, 2006 06:37 PM

About 30 minutes ago I dug up 6 perfect storri eggs and one lousy one for a total of seven. They were laid sometime between Friday and Saturday evening. I started to feel very ill Friday night and did not make it up and around until Saturday evening, as soon as I saw the condition of the female I knew she had laid. I was still too wiped out to dig them up until just now. The entrance to her nest was still open, but deeper down it was closed off, and several inches of dirt were packed firmly on top of the eggs.

Here is a copulation pic from 1/18/06.

I wish you luck incubating your eggs. Now I must go out and dig up some ackie eggs. I am not sure they are good.
Did you get the power outage. We just got the electricity back on. Good luck

Thank you for your comments guys.

Frank, no power outage here recently. I'm a ways up the road from you. I intend to have a nice generator setup like yourself someday.

Thanks,
Neal

As I venture into the next level of keeping these great creatures I worry about power outages. I'm looking at stand by generators to act as my contingincy plan. I always wondered what others do. Over the last 2 years I've had power go out twice for a period of 4 days. In Ohio and the winter, this would be devastating.

I have a 12K propane standby, but the automatic part quit working a while ago. But all I have to do is start it, its wired in, so no plugs have to be messed with.

I also have a backup 5K gas generator.

There are two important parts the generators maintain. The incubator room and the mouse room. We do not get so cold as to be a problem, or at least its rare. And monitors love the heat. So if the power goes out in the summer, the monitors only complain that their heat lites have gone off.

Without backup electricity, the mouse building would be toast in an hour.

I have a friend that has commerially bred mice for many years(became a millionire breeding mice) I told him I was commerially breeding mice, he similed and said, there is one important thing with breeding mice, a good generator. I laughted. Cheers

I've been beating myself up for sometime over not having a good plan. I just need to buy a generator and quit procratinating.

Congratulations!
My v storri bred too. I have 4 viable eggs out of 5 laid. My female deposited the eggs only a couple of days before yours did. I expect them to hatch around may 20:Th if everything goes well.
