Frog Choice Decision Azureus vs. Terribilis

markj May 19, 2003 12:40 AM

Ok, sorry about posting this again but I wanted to even more specific. I am in a lockdown between these two frogs. My pros for Az. They are blue which is really cool, large, bold, eat larger food, and are blue(again, I find that really cool). But terribilis are just like that I have heard if not more bold, besides from the blue. I am having a lot of trouble here. Can anyone help me? Thanks
Mark

My first frogs were terribilis and I don't regret it, however, I would recommend to someone else getting leucomelas as their first frogs. What they lack in coloration (frankly they are actually very pretty), they make up for in personality. I would wait on the azureus, as you might get frustrated with them taking longer to acclimate themselves and, hence, being quite shy in the beginning. Terribilis are always out, but, they don't do very much. They are fat and lazy, which of course adds to their appeal, but don't expect too much out of them. Consider the leucs.

These will not be my first darts, I have had my auratus for a year now. I am looking for something a little more exciting than them that is why I can't decide between these 2

Hey Mark,

My first frogs were azureus....I find them to be very bold, out all the time and not shy at all even when I put my hand in the tank (my female comes right over to my hand at times)...unless a frog does not know I have come up to the tank and gets freaked they are almost always out...but to contrast that, I sold two froglets to my boss and she finds that hers are very shy and hardly out when she is around. I figured out the problem with this situation so can't speak to others setups...my azureus tank, with 5 frogs, is smack in the middle of my living room, people and cats walking around and staring into the tank all the time so they got used to it, learned nothing bad will happen and stay out. My boss on the other hand has her azureus tank in a bedroom and only her son is in the room except for feeding and he is not in the room all that often. So I think it really matters how they grow up and what they get used to. I think they were an awesome frog to start with if you have done your homework, have enough fruit flies (they eat like pigs) and have a way to control both heating and cooling...they would be great.

I have to agree with this. I took the same advice from a lot of people and I will say I am very very pleased with my Leucs. They are very active and fun to watch.

I have also just about a month ago, got 2 Azureus also, and they seem more shy than my leucs were. I have heard that they will become more bold over time. I have seen a little bit of this and they are out a little bit, but they seem to scare very easy.
