Misting wood cages?

kiknskreem Feb 12, 2006 10:02 PM

Looking for what people are doing with their wooden cages. I have one that is made of wood and pegboard, the wood is stained and has two coats of polyurethane on. Not the best I know. The pegboard has two layers of poly as well. Will this hold up to occaisonal misting?

What product did you use exactly? Not just the brand, the product itself.

Also, what kind of wood did you use?

But in general the biggest issue with cage sealants is when they are exposed to moist and/or acidic substate all the time. Moist cypress mulch, for example. Cage walls are not as big of an issue. Water droplets evaporate and/or roll down to the cage floor pretty quickly.

As such, the cage floor and first few inches of cage wall are the areas that need the most protection. Cage floors should really have some kind of plastic lining. The first few inches of cage walls should also be lined if a moist/deep natural substrate will be used.

But pegboard is difficult to seal properly and allow direct moisture contact. I would avoid spraying these areas.

I used MINWAX Fast-Drying Polyurethane. Clear Satin. I don't see anything more specific on the can. I don't know what kind of wood the cage is made out of as its an old table that I converted. When I get the chance I'm going to put down self adhesive linoleum flooring.

That is an oil-based product and pretty durable. Just keep an eye on it and give it plenty of time to offgas.
