Cloudy water

newturtlemom Feb 13, 2006 09:58 AM

Hi everyone,
I have had my 2 RES for about 4 years now. I have made many tank changes over the years as well as filters etc. I just had the house painted and decided to move them into another room giving me more space in my room. (When I got them I was in college so they have made it through many changes)

The problem I am noticing now, is that since the switch of location, the water is very cloudy. When we moved them we did changed the water and used bottled water that I do not normally use with them. (It was whatever was on sale at the time) We also cleaned out the filter. (Fluval 304) What do you think could cause this and do you know of something that will help?

Thanks so much for any help,
Jodi

Sometimes cloudy water is due to the explosive growth of bacteria, usually in a newly setup tank. It occurs because the bacterial population of the tank is not in balance with the level of waste nutrients. This will usually sort itself out as the tank matures - it should disappear more quickly if partial water changes (say 20%) are performed. Also, avoid overfeeding (very important in a new tank), to help reduce the waste levels. Remove any uneaten food, decaying plant matter, etc.
Why are using bottled water for the turtles? If you have drinking water from the tap that is safe for human consumption it will be safe to use in the turtles aquarium as well.

Thank you for the information, I will do some water changes and see if that helps.

Not so sure about the water being safe to drink, I usually set it out for a few nights before giving it to the turtles.

Thanks again,
Jodi

How big is this tank, and what is the water volume?
