Help! Beardie Vomited!!

renland Feb 13, 2006 10:24 AM

I haven't posted here in a while, but I am so upset right now! I have a German GiantX named Ozzie, and a few weeks after I adopted her I rescued my male Dunkin. The previous owner was a dolt--he had never had a heat lamp for him (only a heat rock, blah!), never fed him any greens, and had never given him live crickets, just the gooey ones in the can. Dunkin's eyes were half moons when I got him, like he was too weak or malnurished to open them fully. This was before Christmas.....Dunkin has been steadily improving and becoming an active beautiful little beardie until last night.

On Saturday night, I fed both Ozzie and Dunkin crickets, and they both seemed to enjoy them and be themselves. Then last night, neither of them would eat their greens, which they normally attack. Dunkin was in the middle of a full body shed, so I helped him get the skin off and thought that maybe that's why his appetite was off. Then, later that night I found the bottom of his cage strewn with weird looking food. At first I thought that he had scattered the contents of his food dish, but then I made out multiple severed cricket heads, and some whole crickets, staring out at me! I was so freaked to realize that Dunkin had vomited his stomach contents! He is still alert, watching everything that goes on in my room, but I don't think that he is 100%. Could it have been the crickets? Is vomiting relatively uncommon? Is there anything that I can do for him?? Thanks from one concerned mommy.

he may have parasites....time to super clean the cage out! a vet visit wouldn't hurt. At least take in some fresh poop for a fecal exam.

What is your substrate? sometimes they can vomit because of impactation. Eating a bunch of superworms in one feeding can also block up the digestive tract.

actually I wouldn't freak to hard yet. Vomiting is pretty common in beardies. It is usually from over eating on superworms or even mealworms, but I have had it happen with crickets too. Especially if there heat has been reduced for any reason. I would check your temps and make sure he can digest what he has left fine and then keep him plenty hydrated. He may still not eat for a few days and look pretty sickly but after that he should recover of course if he doesn't improve or vomits after every meal he eats then it's time for a vet trip. Hope this helps.
