Manouria Emys Emys problem.

rpz Feb 13, 2006 11:27 AM

Wondering if anyone can help me with this. I have an emys that I have now for about 5 months now. It is about 11 inches straight shell. It seems to have a runny nose. I think it may have had it when I got it but it wasn't as noticable as it is now. It's a clear discharge & doesn't appear to be thick & isn't constant. Appetite is still fine. My question is, do I start giving meds, which might make it stop eating or wait a while? Also, this might seem like a dumb question, but, being that this species isn't fond of high temps...do I increase temps to help fight off a possible cold, or leave as it is? Could this be runny nose syndrom? Any help would be appreciated.

You may want to do a fecal and check for parasites and then go from there. When my greek got a runny nose it was usually either parasites or to high humidity.

emys often have pus in the corners of their eyes in the morning after a chilly night. Could that be the case with yours ?

Yes, eyes are a little watery in the AM but that's not a real concern. His nose is a little runny. Appetite is fine though. I have baytril but am not sure if I want to risk screwing up his appetite. Also, I let him soak every day but other than that his enclosure is dry. Could that be causing runny nose syndrom? I have tried cypress mulch but it always seems to have gnats that hatch in it from the moisture & it gets kind of moldy looking. Am I buying the wrong type maybe? I know I must sound stupid but I never had a tortoise that required this kind of environment before.
