Knobs - breeding feedback ?

I have a pair of '02 knobs that hooked up nicely several times last season but produced a clutch of eight slugs. It was their first breeding season. It may have been a timing issue. I've successfully bred "other" colubrids in years past. Any high success knob breeding recipes out there ?
