The niles are concentrated in the City of Cape Coral, Lee County, FL.
It's a subdivided community west of Fort Myers. The city is situated on a peninsula. The Cape Coral peninsula was historically mesic slash pine flatwoods and tidal swamp. Development of Cape Coral began in the late 1950s and by 2000 this fast-growing community had a population of 102,286 residents, which represented a 36.3% increase since 1990. Like most of Florida it has been turned into a man made land of canals, and roads.
This had pushed most of the native animals out of the area, and left them to live on sections of set aside land or preserves. It is the new developed area in which the feral animals (such as nile monitors) have staked claim.
