Did anyone have this problem?

tato Jul 26, 2003 06:19 PM

I have a 5 month old savannah monitor, she was a hatchling when I got her and showed alot of interest in eating, now she just lays there. I even bought live crickets to see if that would grab her attention and nothing. I know there not very active lizards but shes more layed back that usual. Wanted to know if there could be something wrong or if this is normal. If anyone has any insight on my situation please feel free to write back. Thank you.

Your lizard seems to be in a slow decline. That behavior isn't normal.
It may be a parasitic problem, since its wild caught, and they all have them. A clean bill of health from the vet is always a good idea.
But because you've had it for 5 months already, I suspect your husbandry needs to be improved. I can see paper towel and big rocks in the photo. Is it being kept on that?
Please continue to search for information on how to set up your pet. That is really beyond the scope of a forum post, but you can start with the link at the bottom. Keep in mind, the person who wrote that, has had good success keeping monitors.
Another good source is the new book out on savannas called Savanna Monitors by Thakoordyal and Bennett. It is an inexpensive book, and the latest one written on captive care of monitors.

Good luck. Your pet has hung on this long, but he's a little baby, and needs you to help him pronto. Not eating is a last-ditch shout for help.

Monitor FAQ

Could you tell us something about how her cage is set up? Size? What's her basking spot temp and cool side temp? Does she have a water tub to soak in? Also, what have you been feeding her? I find it kind of odd that you said you even bought live crickets to see if that would stimulate her appetite. If you haven't been feeding her live crickets (what probably most people feed their juvenile monitors as the bulk of their diets), what have you been feeding her for five months? Has she seen a vet and been checked for parasites? Monitors are pretty hardy creatures and may go a long time before the effects of an illness or husbandry problem start to show. The problem is that usually by that point the animal is in serious enough trouble that it needs to see a vet ASAP. So, tell us how you have her cage set-up (esp. temps) and get her to a vet. Good luck.
