gothlic768 Feb 13, 2006 09:11 PM

a few weeks ago i post on the B.D. forum about a problem i had at my ex-high school about 2 beardie babies i brought to them about 2 yrs ago.. i finally got sick of the mistreatment of them and the teacher told me to take them so i did...they acused me of stealing them b/c i refused to give them back to that horrible place...they were still small when i got them back(only about 10 inches long at 2 yrs) they gained weight quickly and even grew a little ..when i looked at them today the smaller one of the two eyes are sunken in and she is not very active or alert.. I fed them crickets and she wouldnt "hunt"... i soaked her and she drank a lot of water and i also gave her an incestivores (sorry i cant spell)first aid powder that u mix with water and then some Nekton-MSA vitamins mixed with water aswell.... do u have any other ideas about what i should do??
thanks
katie

Well... IMO, if YOU were the one that brought them to the school in the first place, and YOU, the original keeper, saw that they were being mistreated, I think any good owner would do the same thing and take them home.

Sunken in eyes is a sign of emaciation (starvation) and dehydration. What you're doing is a good start, you might want to consider taking them to an experienced herp vet, as well (www.arav.org to find one near you). It is better for the animal and your wallet to start out with the vet then follow up at home, then to start at home and have things not go well so that the animal REALLY needs the vet (to paraphrase Ian from this board ).

Also, you can request a copy of the beardies' file from the vet and show to the school as a proof that they let them sink into such poor condition. After all, the vet is a professional. The sooner you take to the vet the better so that the condition they're in is more like how they were in the classroom.

Best of luck to you with this situation, keep us posted.

I told them soo many times to take care of them i even bought alot of vitamins and food and everything for them i tried and they said if i took them back they were going to expell me and i did take them so they expelled me....i didnt have enough time to take her to the vet she was dead when i came home today... it happened really quickly and she was eating crickets and hunting them like 3-4 days ago and then she got sick and i tried soaking her and giving her pedilite but it was just too late...i tried my best and i feel horrible for even bringing them to that retched place and i will get them for animals abuse b/c they also have 2 leopard tortoises in a little plastic kiddie pool with no UVB and no heat lamp feeding them citrus and iceburg....and they habve a corn snake that they havent bought mice for in a few weeks and he got out b/c somebody didnt lock his cage and he got cuts all down his back (my friends there keep me updated) and they cant do anything about it b/c they will expel them too...they also have farm animals that they dont feed nearly asmuch as they should..got any ideas on who i could call about it??

Begin by contacting the humane society, and local bi-law enforcement. One of these organizations should know how to proceed, however bring lots of care info with references, as they may not be that familiar with the species involved.
