Worried about my New Red Eyed Tree Frog

AshSolo Feb 13, 2006 10:14 PM

I just purchased a new young Red Eyed Tree Frog on Sunday, and I'm worried about his behavior. I've never owned one of these before, so I'm like a worried new mother right now. Last night, I woke periodically to check on him, and he wasn't active all night. I attributed this to the hectic day he had yesterday (His time at the Reptile show, my getting him home, getting him in his terrarium, etc.). About half an hour ago, (10:30 PM) he finally started moving around, but he hasn't eaten a cricket yet. I also noticed him a few minutes ago rubbing at his face and opening his mouth up wide several times as if he had something lodged in there. I couldn't see anything, but i'm still worried. Is this normal behavior?

I'm also worried about his substrate. I used EcoEarth, as the breeder and my herpetology professor both suggested, and it's sticking to him. He keeps trying to rub it off, and I'm afraid it will irritate his skin. Am I worry about nothing here? I'm greatful for any help. If I have cause to worry, please do not hesitate to IM me immediately! (AIM: Ashley Bair) Thanks!

generally, if you see your frog rubbing itself and opening its mouth it is because it is shedding, you may see the frog eating the shed. if it is shedding, then it won't be interested in food until it has finished, and because you just got it, it may need a day or two to relax and get acclimated to its new surroundings. make sure you keep the tank and the soil moist, mist the tank daily, for the frog and provide a waterbowl about 1-2" deep for your frog to soak in, this will help keep the eco earth off the frog. eco earth is very similar to bed a beast and forest bed and should be a fine substrate for your frog. the eco earth won't irritate his skin, as long as you keep the tank moist. you should do some research to find out the proper temperature and humidity levels for the red eye as they are a tropical species and require a more tropical climate then it's tank alone can provide.
