Question about purchasing from other countries

CanopicJar Feb 14, 2006 08:16 AM

Hello all.

I have a good friend who is a corporate pilot. He flies big-wigs all around the world. He is generally at each location for 2-5 days and is pretty much free to do as he pleases while waiting. It seems that it would be easy enough for him to pick up a breeding pair of snakes from about anywhere he travels. He seems fine with it as well, but we both want to make sure that we are not breaking any laws in the process. For instance, in the next few weeks, he will be traveling to India, Turkey and China. I am interested only in non-venomous snakes. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks for your advice,
Travis

You'd still have to follow import/export laws. I would think your friend should know that. Even though he regularly goes through customs, he still should still have to declare any items he is bringing into the country. From what I've read in other posts the Cites paperwork can take months.

You would have to get export permits for the country of origin and import permits for the US prior to him bringing the snakes back. Furthermore, you would have to get the permits for particular numbers of particular species, not just "snakes".
Many countries would be unlikely to issue you the permits.

It would be easier and cheaper in the long run to just call Glades herp or some other importer and order what you want.
