Baytril and pregnancy?

colubrids Feb 14, 2006 01:43 PM

I posted on the Kingsnake forum the full story but the short of it is, I just acquired a female kingsnake that is on baytril to treat an RI she got while with her previous owner. she has been on Baytril for over a month I am told. She is of a healthy weight and only has some wheezing remaining but clearly is not over the RI.

The issue is I beleive she is pregnant. She is become more distended over the last two weeks i have had her but has had healthy bowel movements so its not a build up of fecal matter. Is the baytril going to cause problems with these eggs and will she have a difficult timein laying the eggs due to her RI? My vet is out of town for the week...so I am just searching for info till I can speak with him.

thanks
Rob

Rob,
Animal reproductive studies with Ciprofloxacin, (same family and a metabolite of Baytril), have shown no fertility or embryo development issues with its use. A concern I would have now would be the time period that your snake has been on Baytril. If the RI has not been resolved by Baytril in over a month, either the causative organism is resistant to Baytril, the dosage of Baytril was incorrect, or something else unrelated to an RI is going on. I would probably have your vet re-evaluate the situation. Let us know how it turns out.

Kelly
