EMAA prejudice against snake and rodent owners

boidbrain101 Feb 14, 2006 03:52 PM

I recently recieved a letter from East Missouri Action Agency, Inc. In which they stated "based on the reptiles and rodents in your home and the odors they cause, we have elected not to provide weatherization services. Should these conditions be improved considerably, you may reapply for our program." I don't know about anyone else, but this sounds prejudice to me. Are they going to deny people that have dogs or cats because they cause odors?? Don't think so!! Any other oppinions?

What kind of service are they providing? Are you paying for it?
I do believe that is worng not to provid a service just because you have snakes.

Mike, no offense Bro, but do it really smell that bad ? It certainly sounds like predjudice to me, but you may have to learn how to do all that yourself.

Quig-- No offence taken, and no it does't smell that bad. I've smelled a lot more (and stronger) odors from people keeping dogs and cats in their houses (especially cats). I think part of it may be that the guy who did the energy audit for the weatherization program is scared to death of snakes. Some of what was supposed to be done I can't do because I have a bad back.

Funny how even the big guys are afraid of snakes isn't it? And I understand bad back. I'm an ol' man and it's all catchin' up to me. Take care and good luck.

It appears the EMAA is a not for profit agency and would have the right to deny or limit service to anyone they feel does not "qualify" for their services. If they feel that the smell of the animals could somehow dimish the effectiveness of their product or service or if the animals you keep may somehow be able to damage said products or services then they are not discrimitating but acting in their best interest. Hell if the smell is that bad - maybe they think you need a little draft going thru your house (LOL). I don't know - if they have given you the opportunity to clean up and reapply then do so, or figure out how to do it yourself.

Michael –

This was a pretty funny thread. I’m sure that all of us who have kept sizable quantities of live rodents and/or reptiles in our homes may become just a little desensitized as to how the smell can seem from time to time to outsiders.

Anyway, you said:

>> “Are they going to deny people that have dogs or cats because they cause odors?? Don't think so!!”

What makes you so sure? It’s very possible they send those “Clean up or else we won't help you” letters to dog and cat owners with odor issues, too.

Good luck!

Do yo breed rats or mice? In my VERY limmited experience, the odor caused by rats is managable and reptiles (with a few exceptions are the least smelly of all animals. Mice on the other hand are about the most foul of all animals. I wouldn't want to go into a house that had a mouse colony.
