Odor in tank - what could it be/

zhivago97 Feb 14, 2006 07:15 PM

Not an overpowering odor, but just enough so that it is noticeable, especially if the room door is closed and the smell builds up. It's not a burning smell and nothing funky, just a stuffy smell.

The tank is otherwise clean and is free of anything unusual (except my young jurassic milk). There are a couple wood pieces from petsmart and a water bowl. The substrate is a shredded cotton type material. However, this same odor also occurs when I use newspaper in the tank.

Could the media be creating the odor when heated by the overhead heat lamp?

Do other media types create any kind of odor?

Thanks, Tom

Now that you mention it I noticed a similar smell coming from trying a new substrate. I tried that dark grey cottony stuff (I think it's recycled toilet paper, yuk), I only use aspen, easier to spot and remove their terds.

Yes, I tried the same gray stuff, and it is really hard to see any waste on it. That is a bad color to keep animals on. Derek
