Hermann's Tortoise doesn't like her humid hide?

Thera Feb 15, 2006 09:47 AM

I have a 6 mo. old hermann's tortoise and I can't get her to use her humid hide. It has some cyprus bark/mulch in it that is slightly damp (not drippy, just nice) and she can dig in it and hide under a hide in it, but she doesn't like it. I've also tried a peat/sand mixture too, she didn't like that either. She isntead goes and sleeps in the corner of the cage. Normal activity level, behavior, appetite, water consumption. Any ideas how to get something she would like to dig in? She seems to enjoy digging at her paper towel floor and turning that into shreds, but apparently this hide and play box full of real digging stuff she doesn't like. Ideas?

She's also a very curious tortoise, first thing she did when I gave her this thing was try to eat everything (it's ok, I watched her, she spit it out cos it wasn't yummy).

My baby hermann's doesn't really use his humid hide a lot, but he does go in it every now and then. I have moss from the petstore in his humid hide. Usually he will go in it, sit for a couple minutes and then leave. When I first got him he wouldn't go in it at all, it took a month or so before he would go in it by himself. I used to sit him in the doorway, so he would know where it was. I don't really see him in it very often, but I know he does go in it because I find pieces of the moss around the cage. And, when I do see him in it its usually only for a couple of minutes.
