Uromastyx vs. Iguana diet

ymerejsregor Feb 15, 2006 12:54 PM

On a previous post, I was directed to a food chart at http://www.greenigsociety.org/foodchart.htm (thanks kribby83!) which was an excellent reference for good foods and bad foods. Only catch is that it's for iguanas, and not uros. How similar are their dietary requirements and can the chart be used for uro guidelines as well?

Thanks in advance!

I use rep cal adult iguana pellets, and the fellow I got my giant red saharan from grew him up on it. Not all uros will eat it but I have found that the ones that eat it regularly are way better, bigger, more colorful uros every time, and talk about great poop. As far as nutritional needs and body chemistry go, logic tells me that Iguana and uros have very similar needs. Adults are both strict vegetarians and both are hind gut fermenters. Bottom line is i've had great success with rep cal adult pellets.

He does get some dry juvenille pellets, however I was referring more to other fruits and vegetables.

I soak them for about 5 minutes, when they start to expand I drain them lightly and put in with their greens in whole form. Like I said before not all uros eat them , but most do. If your uro starts eating them you'll most likely have a much better looking animal, again just my opinion.

No other opinions on this??????

There's probably not a lot of input on this because I don't think anyone knows. As far as I know, no one has done any studies of the dietary requirements of uros. My assumption is that if it's balanced for igs, it's probably reasonable for uros. I don't know of anything specific that igs can eat that uros shouldn't - other than in smaller bites.
