What is the purpose of baking soda inside of an incubator?

JDalbo Feb 15, 2006 03:34 PM

I've notice in many of the photos of peoples incubators they have what appears to be baking soda inside. What is the purpose of that? Thanks, Joe

I’ve never seen baking soda in the incubator photos, but maybe it has to do with odor control. With large-volume eggs like from ball pythons, once those snakes have pipped their shells and all that fluid is leaking out while they take their sweet time exiting the eggs – it can get pretty ripe in those boxes.

You know what they say about "rotten egg" smell. Imagine cracking a few hen’s eggs, putting the contents in a bowl and heating it 85-90 degrees for a few days, then taking a whiff of the odor.
