wild catching crayfish / crawfish / crawdads......

reptilespawn Feb 15, 2006 04:15 PM

I am wanting to vary my dwarf caimans' diet a bit more. The streams here in Tennessee around me are quite clean. I mean, I drink out of them. And coming out of the hills they can be pretty pure. I have been looking for crawdads on the internet for sale but can not find any that are not just huge. My dwarves are just 10.5 to 12 inches each. 4 total. how do you guys feel about wild catching crawdads from clean streams? Or do you know of any places that sell them live. Walmart carries some but they are rather nasty looking and green.

I get a minnow trap and fill with old meat.. bologna..ham..etc..

I catch bundles of crawdads for my gator.. i just pinch the "claws" off so they can grab a toe...

As long as you see frogs living in the water.. it should be ok.. Frogs are usually the first thing to die if pollutans are present in a water source...

Crawfish are fine, just not excessively. The exoskeletons can be too much on the crocodilian's digestive system. Keep the servings in moderation, combined with other diet sources.
