redtaildaddy Feb 15, 2006 04:22 PM

I got my new savannah a few days ago and everything has been fine hes been feeding on large dusted crickets and he ate a pinky last night, however today he didnt even come out of his little house, hes just sleeping and chillin, every other day he's spent the majority of his time basking, should I be worried? and today when I put another pinky in there he didnt want anything to do with it.........

Nah- give him a few days. If he eats a lot, he may not eat for a day or two after that. Keep tabs on how often he defecates. It'll come in handy later. If he poops every 3-4 days, then you notice he hasn't pooped in 10 days, start to worry. Not eating is better than not pooping!
He sounds kinda temperamental now, but should calm down in 30-40 days. He'll freak out for a while again when you move him into the dresser. It's normal. He should get a vet check in general, though (parasites especially -blood work and fecal exam)

There are rare exceptions, but virtually all Sav's are wild caught. A captive bred Sav. would probably cost $200 Kinda pricey. All my guys are wild caught, and the vet should be able to kill any "African hitchhikers and stow-aways" for ya.

Keep posting his behavior -there is some great help here. Don't forget...soon you'll be a SOURCE of info. Help the next guy when you can!

What is your set up? Do you have him in an aquarium or in a custom cage? Does he have to climb to get to the basking spot? My larger sav Loki will not climb to a basking spot so I had to change their cage around so that the light was inside where he could get the right temps from being on the ground. Just an idea but I do not know how your cage is set up. Hopefully other people with more experience can help you but you've only had him for a few days so I wouldn't worry unless he stops eating.
