hello. i've been interested in GTP's for some time now but am not intreseted in buying due to money reasons and i already have a lot of herps in my house for me at least. well my questions where: whats the difference between a biak, aru, sorong, and all those other ones.also, for GTP caging, would i be advised to make my own cage or buy one, and buy one from who?

well, assuming since you have boas and know about them, the diff between aru, biak, sorong ect, is just like the diff between columbian, peruvian, suriname ect with boas...it's just their locality. Certain localities tend to offer up certain traits...biaks tend to keep a lot of yellow, aru's tend to have a lot of white, and sorong with the other mainlands tend to have blue dorsal striping. As for caging...anything more vertical that holds heat/moisture well is good.

Everything I've read, including Greg Maxwell's books suggest more horizontal caging than vertical. There's lots of different cage makers out there though and plenty of neat stuff to choose from.

I fully agree that a horizontal heat gradient is more efficient for housing Chondros than a vertical one, as they seem to like to go to the highest spot on the enclosure and often compromise one comfort for another (being at the highest point in the enclosure.). Though i know a few well known and respected breeders who will tell you otherwise .

Anyway here is a good book that explains phenotypes/locality in great detail.

you also should pick up Maxwell’s book, so you make a well informed decision on where you buy your first Chondro from.

Good luck,
