Visited East Bay Vivarium today...

Crotalidae75 Feb 15, 2006 08:27 PM

Greetings all. This is my first posting to KS.com. I decided to post my first msg to the Rainbow boa forum because I am interested in adopting (buying, that is) one in the near future. Right now though, I am a bit low on cash as it is anyway.

Anyhow, as my topic indicates, I visited the East Bay Vivarium in Berkeley, CA, earlier today... What a cool store. I got to meet a baby rainbow boa too. They sure are smaller as babies than I realized. It's hard to judge their actual size just from photographs... This little snake was about 12 or 13" long and no wider than my pinky. Was a very tame, curious little creature. And of course, absolutely beautiful. I had never handled one before, so it was quite different from my big male Everglade's ratsnake I have. Quite a nice leathery sort of feel to their skin.

I've also seen many of the other member's photos here. You all have some very beautiful snakes. When I get mine I will be sure to post photographs.

Wecome to the forum Shane. Always nice to hear from another Bay Area resident.

BRB's are nice snakes. They've been one of my favs for a long time because of thier coloration of course, but they also get to be nice big snakes without getting too big. No need to ever get into rabbits or 8-foot cages.

Thanks for the reply there.
I'm pretty close to Berkeley, about 40 miles north, in Fairfield. There are other places in the region to buy baby Rainbow's, but I'm most likely going to buy from the Vivarium, since I know they have a good reputation. I think it's worth the extra money to also be able to pick out your animal in person too, of course. The other place I know of is the Great Valley Serpentarium in Lodi. They sell the babies for $125, $50 less than the EVB. However, I don't really know if they are captive-bred. It (the webpage) said "CB" babies but that could mean captive-born too (from wild parents?)

Anyway, I think I will try to get some nicer pictures of my Everglade's rat, too, to post to the Ratsnake forum. He is a handsome animal but isn't quite intensely orange like some individuals are. He is more of a burnt orange with noticably darker stripes and very subtle cross-bars, with a yellow throat.

Thanks.....
