I am thoroughly depressed!

phiber_optikx Feb 16, 2006 12:17 AM

It is breeding season again and I should be getting back my taxes,PLUS $2,000 for the accident I was in last month. And I can't spend ANY of it on snakes..... that is depressing! Anyone feel my pain?

Sorry, I have no sympathy for you. You have 5 snakes, I have only 3. lol

Okay, I feel bad for you.

I am jealous of Kathy and Don..... They can have any snake they want and literally have them ALL. I bet after 20 years they don't look at them quite the same as they did their first 5 though..... If I ever get to the point/numbers where my snakes are things and not family then I will sell most of my collection. Choosing which to sell would be impossible though.

Nope, I don't.

Also, Don I am sure enjoys the animals he has now as much as his first "5". It never ceases to amaze me how forward thinking he must be to work out new morphs. Think how organized he has to be to maintain hundreds, thousands, whatever corns of various traits, morphs and het traits and morphs and be able to relay that to each buyer when purchasing their animals.

I think that for many of us there is a number past which we find it difficult to balance the care and enjoyment of our snakes with work, family, other hobbies/interests and other obligations. For me that number is about a dozen. Which is how many I have right now. I still enjoy my snakes as individuals, but have realized that for me, personally, if I were to double my collection it would be too many. Each person't "number" may be different, but many new herpers get caught up in the excitement and simply start "collecting" snakes...Only to wind up with a number that is unrealistic for them.

As for you other posts...Yes, $60/month is too much to be spending on 5 snakes. I spend about $50 every other month to feed 12 snakes...some of which are eating rats right now. It does help, of course, if you take a couple of months off in the winter.

As for not being able to afford another snake...Most of the snakes I have bought during the past couple of years have cost me less that $20 each. Yes, I am a bit of a bargain hunter. No, I don't require expensive, fancy morphs. It's all relative. ENjoy. Duffy

I don't even want to think about how much my snake collection costs me. While my 5 adults were in brumation, I was going through a local pet store to get my mice because my breeders are just not producing this year. It cost me $25 a week. I just recently made an order through rodent pro, so saving money now.
I think I have reached close to my limit on snakes. If I got anymore, I wouldn't be able to enjoy them as much. As it stands now, I spend one full day a week cleaning, and doing all the extra care that I do not do on a daily basis.
As for having breeder mice, it is a pretty big pain. I am debating on even keeping them. Feeding, cleaning may not be worth what they are putting out right now. Although, I would have to keep some because my two ball pythons will not take anything but live. Like everything in life, there is a scale between trouble/hastle and reward/results.

Dont mean to be the one to break the sad party but I am not feeling the pain. I got my taxes yesterday and while I do have things to pay off I have spend about $350 in the past 2 days on my snakes. This includes a new Boa I added to my collection witch brings me un to 7 snakes 5 lizards, a closit full of mice and 2 hairless rats. The wife likes the rats but I need the rat pups for my boas so we are both happy. Also I will be making my final baloon payment on one of my cars so now I will own them all MMMOOOWWWWAAAAAAAA finaly I have no more payments LOL I love tax time. That being said I lost$200 last year relacating rattle snakes, I got a $5 return from that but was charged $40 to file the business tax papors so I lost big with that venture. This is why when my snakes stasrt breeding I will accept cash under the table only LOL Jokeing of course. As soon as my State tax check comes in the mail I can see a couple new Corns added to my collection. My pet store curently has 2 adule Motley Albinos "Male and Female" for $90 hmmmmmmmmmm Wander if they would breed for me this year hmmmmm/ Anyway everyone have fun, get youe tax returns, Spend a couple thousand bucks on our great hobby and enjoy your purchases. Next years tax return will come all to fast, Maybe this year I will add on another room LOL
