WOW! can anyone help me with RACKS IDEA

bigdee Feb 16, 2006 10:23 AM

cant believe I was just on the site studying the HC door rack because I wanted to try to build it. Well it just hit me, how in the world am I going to get some doors from loews/home dep to my home? I been trying to get myself to build a rack for the longest and being that my friend had a MPV van I figured thats how I would get the supplies. Im sitting here reading the site and realized my boy just junked his van so I have no access to any van/truck, this sucks. Does anyone Know of a rack that does not use large pieces of wood maybe something that can fit in a car? I would love to buy a rack but these racks are real expensive I wish I can catch someone in the jersey area selling for a good price but everytime I see a good deal for a rack $150-$200 its too far and cant be shipped. The NY show is in april and the only comp. I see selling racks there are actually from jersey but they are expensive as heck.

What sized box is this for?

Is weight as issue for your final product?

For the HC door rack were you considering cutting down the doors or leaving them one piece?

Regardless, consider having a cabinet shop cut pieces of melamine for you. Not Home Depot, or Lowes, but an actual cabinet shop. You can go pick up the panels and assemble the rack yourself.

At a cabinet shop you'll not only get higher quality melamine, the cuts will be just about perfect. I can't tell you how much that helps when it comes to assembly of the rack.

Because with my job I'm either on the computer or elleven miles (or more) away from it.

And because you're a slacker, LOL.

Bighurt always says the same thing to me.

For size I would want something that adults can live in, my balls are small but I dont want to make/buy a rack for babies and then before I know it have to make another for adulthood.

Weight is an issue I would like something lightweight and as for the HC doors I was thining of cutting them otherwise it seems like a really large rack.

chris_harper2 Feb 16, 2006 09:43 PM

HC doors make for a nice compromise between weight and cost. But for something like a CB-70 box you really need to consider making a rack that is only one box wide. For that box you'll likely end up using 36" doors. If you made it two boxes wide your rack would have a footprint of 36" x 38" at a minimum. Not something that could be moved around the typical home or apartment. But maybe you have that much space.

You can still build a HC door rack that is a single box wide but it is more work. Do you have the tools for such a project?

Or you could build a rack that could be disassembled and not have to cut the doors.

Either way, I'm sure there is always a way to get the doors home. Even if you have to rent a trailer or something.

Yes i was actually thinking one tub wide. I been thinking about when you mentioned making a rack that can be taking apart I was wondering how is that done? I have a circular saw and i many also have access to...forgot exact name but let me describe it, its like a circular saw connected to a base and you lift the saw up or down.

I actually perfer the Sliding Power Miter Saw, 12" better cut depth. Unfortunatly I don't have one Yet!

Riobravoreptiles.com shows you how to cut the doors down. A circular saw can be used but it is a bit tougher to cut the filler material. I did my first one with just a circular saw.

Get a good edge-guide and it will help a lot. For years I did all of my woodworking with a cheap circular saw and cheap edge-guide. I did splurge and buy a nice blade, however.

One concept I looked into but scrapped since I have a full on wood shop was to modify a melamine based closet organizer. At Home Depot I found a ten foot organiser really a two foot shelf unit with four foot poles for either side.

The shelf unit is really two stackable units. if you were to not use the adjustable shelf supports and screw the shelfs at the appropriate heights you could use it for a rack system.

Other thought is to use melamine shelving like I did. It's long so still might be difficult for you to get home. Or you could design the rack and have a local cabinet shop cut all the pieces you need.

Some pics of my racks, they were disigned around the sterilite 1754 tubs. Each holds twenty tubs:

Totally forgot to mention this. Melamine shelving is a very viable option. In fact I only use melamine shelving for sweater-box racks. Either the bull-nosed stuff from Menards or the product from Lowes with the edge-tape already applied.

If this is for a larger box, say like the Iris CB-70, sometimes you can get better material usage from sheet melamine.

However, in the case of the bull-nosed stuff at Menards, it was actually going to cost the same to use 6' shelves as it was to use full sheets. At least based on prices from a couple of years ago.

For boxes longer than 24" but less than 36" HC doors are still my number 1 choice. For boxes less than 24" melamine shelving is my #1 choice, going to a cabinet shop is #2.

For boxes longer than 36", I'm not sure.

Hi – haven’t read every response, so apologies if this has been covered………….
Don’t many places that sell building materials have reasonably cheap local delivery options? Last time I was at Home Depot, for instance, I saw advertising for their vans and such which you can rent by the hour.

Owning a few pick-ups I often forget that option. Thanks for reminding all of us. Thats an excellant recommendation!
