African Dwarf Frog missing toes?

Scout Jul 26, 2003 08:49 PM

Hi. I'm a new owner of three ADFs. I've had them for about two weeks now. This evening I noticed one of them appears to be missing a few toes on her back leg. I'm sure it wasn't like that yesterday. It doesn't look raw or bloody. It just looks a little deformed, like she has it balled up in a fist. She's eating and seems to be getting around fine--I've seen her come up for air (which was what I was most concerned about). I'm not sure if one of the other frogs nibbled on her thinking her toes were food? Or do their feet look funny if they're shedding? Any insight would be much appreciated. Thank you so much!

It's probobly been like that the whole time, and you just haven't noticed. I don't think that they are strong enough to tear each others body parts off.

amazinglyricist is right, they don't have the strength to tear eachother's digits off. It could be a deformity. If it can go through it's daily functions without problems, it's fine.

Hi,

If the toes look a little shorter than the others or seem curled over, adn the frog cannot make them straight then it is likely that those toes were broken. They are often broken when the frogs are netted as the toes are small enough to fit through the mesh and when they are removed from the net the toes get stuck and basically snap. I use a jug to mive my frog to stop the toes from being injured. The frogs seem to manage well with the toes so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Hope this helps,

clawedfrogs (Chris)
