Squirrels attack and kill dog
Published December 2nd, 2005 in Nature.

Three witnesses in the Russian town of Lazo say a large stray dog was attacked and gutted by black squirrels in a city park recently. The accounts of the eye witnesses say that the dog was barking at squirrels who where hiding in a tree . Several squirrels suddenly descended and viciously attacked the dog. When the witnesses approached the scene the squirrels scattered carrying bits of flesh from the deceased canine.

Locals have noticed that there is a shortage of food for the squirrels in this region of Russia. A local newspaper, Komosmolskaya Pravda, has also had a report of chipmunks terrorizing cats this past autumn. Mikhail Tiyunov, a local scientist explained that squirrels might attack birds’ nests in the absence of protein rich foods but never has he heard of an attack on a dog.

My friend Max keeps box turtles in with his doves. They manage to kill and eat about three doves per year. Yes he has seen them attack and kill doves!
