BIG QUESTION - HOW MANY PROVEN, UNPROVEN & DESIGNER CORN MORPHS are there ??

johnberry Feb 16, 2006 11:39 AM

I have a BIG Question I would like some help with from all you Corn breeders .... How many Proven mutations, Unproven mutations (just not proven yet) and Designer Morphs (combination of two or more proven mutations) are there currently recognized in the Corn snake world ??

I'm finishing a book on high end Boid (Python & Boa) Morphs and want to show a comparison between the numbers of recognized morphs in various types of families of snakes.

Any educated estimates would be helpful and much appreciated.

many thanks, John Berry.

There are in the neighborhood of 12-15 mutant genes. I haven't counted them in a while and do not have a resource handy to count from. The proven ones that I remember off the top of my head are
amelanistic
ultra
anerythristic
caramel
charcoal
lava
sunkissed
hypomelanistic
motley
striped
blood red (AKA diffuse, blood red pattern)
lavender

Aztec (zigzag) is screwy and needs work; call it unproven.

Okeetee, Miami, and blood red corns are not caused by single mutants. The Okeetee and Miami phases have been combined with single mutants. Candycane is Miami and amelanistic, and reverse Okeetee is Okeetee and amelanistic. Most of the sunglows are amelanistics that have been selectively bred for minimal white areas.

You can get close to 100 combinations just from what is listed here. Hope that helps.

Rich Z was the first to hatch them out. They popped up in F2 from an Upper Keys X Hypo pairing. I was lucky enough to end up with a het female from him and recovered the gene in my F2's out of her. So far only one Amel Z exists, and it was hatched here. They are also called Anery C, but we are trying to stay away from that name as many of these animals end up with red saddles as adults. All of these developments are in the Cornsnake Morph Guide 2006 edition.

my addiction:
2 normal ball pythons (lazlo and izzy)
1 amelenistic corn snake (zyklon)
0.1 blizzard corn (blizz)

It is pretty standard that a Snow is an animal homo for Anery A and Amel. I wouldn't want to call it a Snow since there is no Anery A present. We are holding of on the naming portion until we have a few more animals to grow up. Undoubtly "Morph Z" will get a new name, but we want to be careful and use something that fits a wide range of homozygous specimens.

I would get a copy of the corn snake manual from Kathy and Bill Love or at least peek at the numbers in the book. That way you have something to cite as a source and not just some random guys number that he can think of. althogh there may be new morphs it is still better to have a good source even if the numbers have changed.

The corn snake morph guide lists most, if not all of them. With the disclaimer that more pop up all the time. It is a Very educational book. Get both books! the more the better
