the sharp stuff

wisp Feb 16, 2006 12:40 PM

so i've gotten the idea to modify a 20 gallon tank for my crested geckos. not complex; a 5/16 screen, some pin hinges, a handle, stand the tank up on end and wa-la.
the hang up is, to attach the hindges, how can i avoid the sharp screws for the gecko? is glue good enough to hold hindges? it's not like the screen door is heavy or anything. other projects i've ground down the sharp points, however that won't work this time. the frame isn't strong enough, or thick.
any thoughts are apreciated.
and i promise to post a picture when it's done. = )

Aside from using a different fastener, here are some simple ideas:

1. Put a dab of 100% silicon sealant on the exposed screw point.

2. Hardware stores sometimes carry a liquid plastic that you can use for tool grips. That stuff will coat the exposed screw nicely.

like rivets?

Yeah, like rivets. Rivets can be a great way to attach things, and they are easy to cut off and re-rivet if you have to remove them for some reason. But, you must use washers for more delicate material so the rivet doesn't pull through. I urge to to try various size rivets on scrap material before choosing the one that works best for your application. And get those washers that are sold for rivet applications.

You could just use a bolt and nut. Tighten it down and then grind the exposed bolt down to the nut. Just a thought for you.

Instead of pin hinges could you redesign and use pivot hinges like you see on glass door cabinets. These worked great for my water dragon enclosure. Glue a chunk of plastic to the aquarium frame then drill your pivot holes into that. Difficult to know for sure what you have in mind without a drawing.
